"X or Grok could prevent these types of misuse if they wanted to," said Clare McGlynn, adding they "operate with a lack of consequences."

The tool has been faulted for permitting users to create images and videos with explicit content and sexually suggestive material, and it was in the past accused of generating inappropriate material of celebrities.

"The platform has been permitting the production and sharing of these pictures for a long time without taking any steps and we have not witnessed any intervention by regulators," the expert added.

XAI's own terms of service bans "showing likenesses of people in a sexually explicit manner".

In a statement, Ofcom said it was against the law to "make or share private pictures or illegal content" and confirmed this included sexual deepfakes generated with AI.
